Antique miniature portrait depicting Mrs. Robinson, rendered after the well-known painting attributed to George Morland.
Mary Robinson (née Darby; 27 November 1757 – 26 December 1800) was an English actress, poet, dramatist, and novelist, as well as a celebrated public figure of the late 18th century. She was also notably associated with the Prince of Wales, with whom she had a well-documented romantic relationship during the height of her fame.
The sitter is shown in period dress with softly modeled features and a bonnet accented in red, executed in a refined late-18th / early-19th-century style typical of miniature portraiture.
The work is signed, though the signature is indistinct / illegible. The portrait is set within an oval metal bezel with convex glass and housed in a bone inlay frame.
A charming and decorative antique portrait, ideal for a gallery wall, bookshelf vignette, or for the collector of historic portrait miniatures.
