Striking pair of antique Continental European giltwood altar candlesticks, likely French or Italian and dating to approximately the 18th to early 19th century. Unusual in form, each features a tall turned and faceted baluster-form standard raised on a distinctive architectural tripod base. 
The restrained, almost Gothic architectural quality of the bases sets these apart from the more commonly seen scrolling Baroque altar candlesticks. Their original gilt surface has developed a beautifully timeworn appearance, with extensive losses revealing areas of gesso and natural wood beneath.
Originally made for ecclesiastical use, the pair has wonderful sculptural presence and works beautifully flanking a painting, mirror, or console.

Condition: Beautifully timeworn condition with extensive age-related wear and losses to the original gilding and gesso, revealing areas of the wood beneath and creating a wonderfully aged surface. The gilt and gesso remain somewhat fragile with occasional flaking. One foot has a partial loss, as shown in photographs. Structurally stable for decorative display.
